SHANTI
THE RAMABAI INDIA PROJECT
INDIA
Shanti, founder of The Ramabai India Project, was born and raised in a slum in Calcutta, where poverty, illness, and limited opportunity were part of daily life. Her future looked bleak until she was given access to a well-rounded education. That opportunity changed everything, opening the door to a healthier, more hopeful, and productive life.
Motivated by her own story, Shanti established The Ramabai India Project to bring that same opportunity to children growing up in similar circumstances. The organization works across both rural and urban communities in India, providing education, life skills, and vocational training to help individuals escape the cycle of poverty.
In rural villages, the project runs schools where children, many of whom are the first in their families to receive formal education, learn in an environment of care and support. The school provides daily meals prepared with vegetables and spices grown on-site, often offering students their only solid meal of the day.
In urban centers, The Ramabai India Project equips young people from slum communities with job training, tutoring, and personal development resources. Many students have now graduated from high school, entered college, and secured full-time employment, achievements once considered out of reach in their family lines.
Shanti’s vision is clear: to see every child recognized, valued, and equipped with the tools they need to thrive. Through The Ramabai India Project, she is helping to build a new future, one child, one skill, and one opportunity at a time.
